What does it mean to have agency in a world of code? Who controls the avatar—the player, the developer, the AI? In this video essay, I explore the ethics, desires, and power dynamics hidden inside simulation games. From childhood dolls to The Sims to open-world sandboxes, we use digital avatars to live out fantasies, test boundaries, and confront our fears—often without real-world consequences. But what happens when those avatars rebel? When the puppet cuts its strings? When the camera turns back on the player?
