When I learned the supreme court decided on overturning Roe v. Wade, I was silent.
Months prior, after the leak, I kept recounting how it was so hypocritical. They are taking away women’s choices but not instituting aid for maternity. They are advocating for armed children and teachers but do not employ regulations. They are not the ones who are birthing, parenting, teaching, and mourning, but they continue to restrict our freedoms. I had one question after the leak: why can the government control our bodies, our choices, and our voices?
I don’t want to become muted. My piece “Autonomy” stares back at the viewer addressing the stereotypes and objectification portrayed. The figures hover over a glass mountain, symbolizing the importance of remaining resilient during a fragile state. The glass mountain reflects the colors from the background; purple and red. Purple illustrates the power, and red embodies courage.
